The Day Care Center now also offers ENT procedures

Modern medicine is increasingly adapting to the fast pace of life and moving away from long weeks spent in a hospital bed. Today’s trend is toward minimal invasiveness, speed, and a quick return to the comforts of home. The One-Day Care Center at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun now also offers one-day surgery in the field of otolaryngology (ENT). It provides patients with a combination of minimally invasive procedures using the latest technologies, performed by a team of top-tier specialists at the European level.

Minimally invasive procedures from the nose to the vocal cords

Same-day surgery is not intended for extensive and complicated procedures, but rather for targeted, precise procedures. A prerequisite is that the patient does not suffer from a serious internal medical condition. Most often, these procedures address problems with breathing, hearing, or the voice.

“Under this approach, we perform surgeries on patients who do not have serious internal medical conditions. We provide minimally invasive procedures in the areas of the nose, ear, and vocal cords with a low risk of postoperative complications,” says nasal surgery specialist and member of the surgical team , MUDr. Jan Kastner, Ph.D.

In the area of the nose, physicians most frequently perform septoplasty (straightening of a deviated nasal septum) and FESS —functional endoscopic sinus surgery—for chronic inflammation and nasal polyps. FESS is also used to restore ventilation of the maxillary sinuses prior to the placement of dental implants. Specialists in Beroun also frequently perform turbinoplasty, which involves reducing hypertrophied tissue in the nasal turbinates in cases of allergic rhinitis or dependence on nasal drops.

“The advantage is that we can combine these nasal procedures—straightening a deviated nasal septum and, using videoendoscopy, treating chronic sinus inflammation and reducing the volume of the nasal mucosa. The goal is to restore nasal breathing and minimize the symptoms of rhinitis in a single operation,”adds Dr. Kastner. Physicians also routinely use dissolvable nasal packing, which minimizes postoperative discomfort.

Middle Ear Surgery and Emphasis on Preserving Voice Quality

Another component of comprehensive ENT surgery is ear surgery. This focuses, for example, on myringoplasty (repair of a perforated eardrum) or plastic surgery of the ear canals (to address narrowing, a condition often faced by athletes). “Starting this year, it is also possible to perform simpler middle ear surgeries,” explains ear specialist Prof. Jan Bouček, M.D., Ph.D.

In the area of the larynx and pharynx, physicians remove nodules, polyps, cysts, or benign vocal cord tumors under endoscopic guidance. “We specialize primarily in minimally invasive surgery of the larynx and vocal cords, with an emphasis on preserving voice quality. Many procedures are aimed not only at removing the disease itself but also at enabling patients to quickly return to normal communication and professional voice use,” explains another member of the ENT team, laryngologist MUDr. Michal Zábrodský, Ph.D., adding: “A certain portion of indications also pertains to voice changes, such as in transgender individuals. Some procedures can be performed without the need for general anesthesia.”

High-Tech Equipment: Lasers and 4K Resolution

The success of same-day surgery relies on state-of-the-art technological infrastructure. For the procedure to be minimally invasive, the surgeon must have a perfect view even into the smallest recesses of the human body.

“We have excellent equipment and instruments comparable to those found in the most modern clinical facilities, even on a global scale. The emphasis is on minimal invasiveness. To ensure a clear view in tight spaces, we use videoendoscopic systems in Full HD and even higher 4K resolution; in ear surgery, we use the most advanced microscopes and drills; shavers are used in the nose, and for surgeries in the nose and on the vocal cords, laser and radiofrequency technologies are available, which significantly accelerate subsequent healing,” describes Dr. Kastner, emphasizing that the quality of care in Beroun is also guaranteed by the high reputation of experienced surgeons who are among Europe’s leading experts in their field.

Early return home

Hospitalization as part of same-day care does not exceed 24 hours. The patient undergoes surgery, rests in bed, and goes home either that same evening or the next morning. “Patients are usually fully self-sufficient after the procedure, but supervision by a loved one at home is required,” concludes Dr. Kastner.

The Future of the Field Lies in Minimally Invasive Methods

The future of modern ENT surgery is clearly moving toward functional and minimally invasive surgery. In general, as in the healthcare sector as a whole, the main trend is toward preventing the development of more serious conditions and diseases. Minimally invasive procedures contribute to this and improve patients’ quality of life.
