AKESO relies on overnight care: New room to eliminate waiting times and expand the range of procedures

29. 7. 2025

Overnight care is a clear trend today, allowing patients to avoid days spent in hospital and even reduce the risk of contracting an infection. AKESO, a medical holding company, has also given a clear green light to this approach and has now launched the 7th operating room of the Day Care Centre at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun.

While in 2023, when AKESO launched the Day Care Centre (we wrote here), 5,300 patients were operated on, the capacity could now increase to 7,000 patients per year. This will be made possible by the launch of the 7th operating room, which will mainly perform procedures in the fields of surgery, gynaecology, coloproctology and ENT.

The seventh operating theatre for same-day care is in purple.

"We currently have 7 operating theatres in operation at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, the last of which was opened in June. They operate every day from Monday to Friday for overnight care. Approximately 600 patients undergo overnight care in Beroun every month. The most common procedures in surgery are hernia, gallbladder and varicose vein operations, and in orthopaedics, joint arthroscopy. We also perform plastic surgery procedures here," says Petr Zeithaml, head of day surgery at AKESO medical holding, adding: "The great advantage of the Beroun hospital is that only day-case procedures are performed here, so the risk of nosocomial infection is minimal."

Comfort and faster recovery

The newly opened ward will also support the development of specialised coloproctological care, i.e. the treatment of colorectal diseases.
"A team of experienced doctors will perform a wide range of coloproctological procedures here, with a particular emphasis on minimally invasive techniques that shorten the recovery time and allow patients to heal faster and in significantly greater comfort," says Július Örhalmi, a coloproctologist at Hořovice Hospital and chairman of the Coloproctology Section of the Czech Surgical Society.

Interconnected care

What does the care of a patient undergoing day-case surgery actually look like? The indication usually takes place at the AKESO POLICLINIC in Nové Butovice, Prague, which works closely with the Day Care Centre in Beroun. This ensures continuity of care and availability of pre-operative consultations for patients from Prague and the surrounding area.

"If the patient is interested, we are able to provide a complete pre-operative examination through our internal outpatient clinic at several locations - at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, the Hořovice Hospital or the AKESO POLICLINIC in Nové Butovice, Prague. In our AKESO outpatient clinic in Pilsen and in the hospital in Hořovice we also provide pre-anesthetic examinations. After the procedure, it is a matter of course that the patient recovers in our specialist outpatient clinics and, if necessary, we also focus on starting early rehabilitation. We are therefore able to take care of the patient from A to Z," says Petr Zeithaml.

For simpler procedures, the doctors prefer minimally invasive procedures in the same-day care, which are so gentle that they usually do not require overnight hospitalization, and after a short bed rest, patients go home for treatment. This allows patients to have psychological comfort while recovering at home and to return to normal life more quickly.

New procedures in gynaecology and ENT

The Day Care Centre also strives to operate as efficiently as possible. The operating theatres at the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital thus run five days a week from 8 am to 6 pm. So far, up to 60 procedures can be performed daily in the 6 operating theatres. Thanks to this, it is also possible to reduce waiting times, which are in the range of weeks.
And what are the future plans for the Day Care Centre? "We definitely plan to expand the range of procedures. We have already started with proctology procedures and gynaecology and ENT procedures will be introduced in the near future," says Chief Zeithaml.

The most common procedures in day care

  • laparoscopic gallbladder and inguinal hernia operations
  • arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder or elbow
  • umbilical hernia surgery
  • minor hand procedures
  • removal of larger skin and subcutaneous lesions
  • procedures on varicose veins
  • minor abdominal operations and others.
