"What brings patients to Beroun is that we have everything under one roof. Available MRI, modern halls, excellent medical staff, and most importantly, a direct link to top-quality rehabilitation," says Zdeněk Kopečný, head doctor of the arthroscopy centre.
It was Chief Kopečný who operated on a patient with a serial number of 60,000 in Beroun. Coincidentally, it was an arthroscopic procedure, which he and his team have been performing here since 2008.
"The arthroscopy centre is our flagship, and over these many years we have made incredible progress. Compared to when we started, we now do about three times as many surgeries a year. The facilities here are such that I still enjoy the work and find it meaningful for the doctors and patients," explains Chief Kopecny.
The Centre has now opened one theatre for orthopaedic procedures and another, the seventh, will open early next year. It will be used for surgical, gynaecological, proctological and ENT procedures, in a one-day care mode.
The principle of overnight care is that modern and minimally invasive procedures are preferred for simpler procedures, which do not require overnight hospitalisation, but after a short bed rest, patients go home for home care. Usually on the day of surgery or the day after.
"It depends on the type of procedure we perform, but in day care we try to mobilise patients as soon as possible," says Petr Zeithaml, head of day surgery.
And how does it work? "The patient comes in instructed and examined from the outpatient clinic, usually by the surgeon. Of course, they need to know what kind of procedure they are going to have, how it will be performed and how the recovery process is. In the morning he comes in on an empty stomach with a pre-operative examination and goes into surgery. In the evening, or at the latest the next morning, he goes home, or rehabilitation follows," describes Chief Kopecny.
His words are confirmed by one of the patients. "I came in the morning, they signed me up for a pre-operative examination, and then it went quickly. I went to the operating room and tomorrow I will go home. So I hope I will be fine as soon as possible."
